The Miller Farm
MacFarlane Pheasants raises pheasants in Wisconsin, Missouri, and South Dakota. The South Dakota farm is leased and we call it the Miller Farm. It is located about 10 miles outside of Miller, South Dakota. The farm was a pheasant production facility when we started using it. The owner contacted MacFarlane Pheasants online and offered to lease us the farm when he was ready to get out of the pheasant business. After careful consideration, we decided it would be a great idea to have a physical presence in South Dakota, where we sell lots of birds.
There are 18 acres of flight pens on the farm. The pens on the farm are 1200 feet long by 50 feet wide. They do not have a lane down the center. In Janesville, our pens are 150 feet long and 80 feet wide with a lane running down the center. The 50-foot wide pen requires fewer people when it is time to drive birds out of the pen for delivery. This is a real advantage because we send people from Janesville to do the catching and deliveries.
On the Miller farm in South Dakota we hire a local employee to take care of the birds we keep there. He lives on-site and does all of the feeding, watering, and care of the 25,000 Ringneck starter pheasants we deliver to the site in June. We use Kent Feeds from Sioux City, IA as our feed supplier for pheasants at the Miller Farm. It is the same supply company we use at all our farms.
Deliveries started on October 14, this year and will be finished by November 4. A team of six employees (one week at a time) travel to South Dakota to do the catching, loading and delivering. Employees enjoy the opportunity to see another part of the country, even though they are catching and shipping 1500 birds each day they are there. If you would like to learn more about the Miller Farm please e-mail chris@pheasant.com. He would be happy to hear from you.
